EquiCrown® Frequently Asked Questions
EquiCrown Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between EquiCrown® compression wraps and normal wraps?
EquiCrown® compression wraps are medical-grade bandages for horses, characterized by their anatomical fit and predefined pressure that stimulates blood and lymph circulation in the horse's leg while providing a gentle massage. These breathable bandages are available in standard and custom sizes. Their special knit and optimal compression promote and support lymphatic flow and blood circulation, contributing to faster recovery for the horse's legs.
When should EquiCrown® be used?
EquiCrown® can be used for various indications, including: Supporting lymphatic flow and blood circulation, Swollen legs, Soft windgalls, ganglions, Post-operatively, to avoid swelling (e.g., after operative treatment of the plantar annular ligament), For post-operative wound care (e.g., after an arthroscopy), Post-operative or post-traumatic swelling, For injuries (e.g., suspensory ligament, tendon injuries, etc.), Wound and scar treatment, As support when resuming movement (after operations, immobilization, etc.), Following exertion and over-exertion, As a prophylactic (e.g., during training), For long transports.
How to apply EquiCrown® compression wraps?
To apply EquiCrown® compression wraps, start by cleaning the horse's leg. Then, starting from the bottom, wrap the bandage around the leg, making sure to evenly distribute pressure without pulling too tight. The bandage should be snug but not constricting. Always check the horse's comfort level and adjust the bandage as needed.
Can EquiCrown® compression wraps be washed?
Yes, EquiCrown® compression wraps can be machine washed. It's recommended to use a gentle cycle and mild detergent. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Hang to dry.
What exactly is meant by compression?
Compression has been used successfully in human medicine for many decades, particularly to improve lymphedema and maintain good therapy results or in scar therapy (e.g., after burns). The same applies to horses. The compression directs accumulated lymphatic fluid back up the leg to the lymph nodes, where it will be transported into the venous system. This produces a thinner, more defined, and more agile leg.
What materials are EquiCrown® compression bandages made from?
EquiCrown® Compression Bandages are made from 74% polyamide, 17% elastane, and 9% viscose. Learn more about materials.
How many hours per day can EquiCrown® compression bandages be worn?
No, EquiCrown® compression bandages are not damaged by water (washable at 40°C) and are sun and ointment resistant.
How long can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages be used?
Yes. This can happen if the horse has mildly swollen legs and the bandages are worn during riding. The movement can reduce the horse's leg circumference, which could cause the bandage to slip slightly. The change of coat (especially from winter to summer) may cause the bandage to slip due to shedding. When sizing for EquiCrown® Actives, ensure the measurements are taken post riding, and if possible cold hosing; this will ensure a tight fit reducing the chance of slippage.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages also be worn during riding?
Yes, EquiCrown® Actives can be used for turnout or in paddocks. However, consider the level of mud in the open paddock. You may need to remove the wrap more frequently to clean the leg and prevent chafing points.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages be damaged by water, ointments, or the sun?
Infrared fabric technology increases the blood flow to an area on the horse, increasing the heat and reflecting this into the horse’s body underneath the fabric. These products are generally a loose to mildly snug fit and do not provide any compression or blood movement.
EquiCrown® compression bandages work with externally applied pressure with accurate and precise compression, ensuring fluid movement up and out of the leg, reducing the heat in the leg while assisting the body in increasing oxygen and blood flow to the extremities while flushing toxins and out.

What is the difference between Infrared fabric technology and EquiCrown® Compression Bandages? (Eg. Back on Track, Hansbo, Nano-Tec)
How do I determine the correct size for my horse?
Measuring is required to accurately size your horse for EquiCrown compression bandages. This is best done post-exercise or riding; if this is not possible, walk your horse and cold hose to ensure minimal fluid in the leg. Then two measurements are required.
- Measurement 1: Largest circumference of the fetlock
- Measurement 2: Circumference at the middle of the cannon bone
Ensure that the tape measure is firmly pulled and taut while measuring because the bandages must fit snugly against the skin to produce their compression effect. It is best to measure all four legs to ensure accurate measurements. The measurements of the hinds and fronts will assist in providing the best fit.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandage also be worn in conjunction with sports boots or riding boots?
Yes, this is generally safe and effective. However, check that the boots do not apply pressure to the zipper or velcro fasteners or cause the bandage to slide down.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages also be worn in conjunction with shipping boots or gaiters?
Yes, this is generally safe and effective. However, check that the boots do not apply pressure to the zipper or velcro fasteners or cause the bandage to slide down. For longer trips, EquiCrown®® compression wraps can be worn under the gaiters to support the lymphatic system.
Why do EquiCrown® Compression Bandages also come in a version with knitted-in silver threads?
EquiCrown® Fit Silver has Silver ions in the threads to prevent bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (a bacterial infection) and other microbial growth such as mold or mildew. EquiCrown® is beneficial in cases of skin damage, horses with sensitive skin, and prevention of lymphangitis and malanders. Learn more about the benefits of silver in bandages
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages trigger an allergic reaction?
EquiCrown® compression bandages have been awarded "Oeko-Tex Standard 100" certification, guaranteeing that only materials harmless to humans and the environment are used in their manufacture. All other products from Juzo used in medicine for humans also bear the CE marking and fulfill all the requirements of the Medical Products Act.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages be applied to healed wounds?
Yes, the bandages can be applied to healed wounds, provided the wounds are completely closed. In the case of fresh or open wounds, the bandages can be worn on top of wound dressings.
Can heat accumulation occur under EquiCrown® Compression Bandages?
No, heat cannot accumulate because the material has an open weave knit and is permeable to air. Additionally, cold hose therapy can be applied overtop of the bandages or used in conjunction with ice boots. Compression therapy reduces the heat and inflammation in the extremities.
Can EquiCrown® Compression Bandages lead to constriction?
No, when fitted correctly, the defined and accurate compression ensures that no constriction can arise because it is impossible to tighten the bandages too much, as is the case with conventional wraps. It is not suggested that EquiCrown® compression bandages be used by multiple horses unless they have been measured and the size has been confirmed to be the same between the horses.
Are EquiCrown® Compression Bandages washable?
Yes, EquiCrown® compression bandages are machine washable at 40 °C. Click here for more care instructions
How frequently should EquiCrown® Compression Bandages be washed?
